Great Crested Grebe family near the Lido
The Great Crested Grebe chicks on the Serpentine are considerably older than the ones on the Long Water and are now wandering around by themselves when they aren't begging their parents to feed them. The family has loosely assembled by the terrace of the Lido restaurant, with mother in charge while father goes off fishing. The chicks pick up feathers from the water, a normal part of a grebe's diet to wrap up sharp fishbones.

The Great Crested Grebes on the Long Water have been keeping their chicks under the bushes till today, but now judge them to be old enough to come out into the open. The chicks are still sticking very close to their father while their mother is away finding fish for them.

I was wrong about there being two chicks in the fourth Grey Heron nest on the island. It's hard to see into the nest, as the right side of it is hidden by hawthorn branches. The two young Grey Herons from the third nest on the island have flown up into the fourth nest, where there are two much younger chicks. It's not at all clear why they did this. Have their parents stopped feeding them on their own nest, and they're hoping for attention in this one? They won't get it, they'll be chased out as soon as an adult arrives.

A Tufted drake turns upside down to preen his underside. He has to paddle with one foot to stay in this position, which causes him to revolve rapidly.

Two Mute Swans eat the leaves in a reed bed. These are very tough and fibrous, but swans have serrated bills and can grind their way through most things.
Wood Pigeon baffled by Portuguese laurel

A rain-wetted Wood Pigeon in a Portuguese laurel can't reach any of the ripe berries, which grow on the tips of thin twigs. It could reach some unripe ones but avoids them. Normally Wood Pigeons will eat any fruit no matter how unripe, but this is a poisonous species containing hydrogen cyanide especially in the unripe fruit, and perhaps the extremely bitter taste warns it off.

I've seen a few gulls in Blackpool starting to eat pigeons, including dropping their carcsases on startled unsuspecting tourists. This trend coincided with austerity and the issuing of reinforced, gull-proof, bin bags. I would venture that gulls are lazy - if they can't find takeaway scraps they will kill a pigeon but just eat the breast without going for the scrawnier parts.

so cute just like kids,, my gareden pigeon with crippled leg has just returned after a wk away,, she scoots along like a kid on a sake board but she/he is doing well. i always put fresh water out for them

They're Ravens. And they're still at the Tower. The condition of London is unfortunately none too good.

@@oldluke7653 Crows in the street, Ravens in the Tower -- the only ones in central London. They're different from Carrion Crows and much bigger.
